What to expect on the Moraine Lake sunrise tour
The Moraine Lake Sunrise & Lake Louise tour from Into the Wild Tours is a small-group van trip that reaches Moraine Lake before first light, gives you about two hours there, then drives to Lake Louise for another two before taking you back to your pickup point. It started from $92 per person when we checked on 30 September 2026. Pickup, a local guide, hot drinks, blankets, headlamps and seat pads are included.
The calendar below shows which dates still have space. The listing currently offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and you can pay later.
Moraine Lake Road is closed to private cars all year, so a sunrise there means a seat on a tour, a licensed commercial operator or a Parks Canada shuttle. This tour takes the driving off your hands and gets you to the Rockpile, the pile of boulders above the lake, while it is still dark.
Reviewers write about the guides more than anything else. Guides and transport both score 4.9 out of 5 on the listing, and value for money scores a little lower, at 4.7. Hannah is named more often than any other guide, with Pam, Sebastian and Joel also mentioned, and several people say their guide told them where to sit at Moraine Lake and which trail to take at Lake Louise.
We haven't taken this tour. For this page we read the listing, its recent reviews and the reviews of three other GetYourGuide sunrise tours to the same lake, paying particular attention to cloud, timing and how the Lake Louise stop is used.
Four things are worth knowing before you book:
- The sunrise depends on the weather, and cloud can hide it completely.
- The listed six hours is shorter than the published itinerary, and summer pickups are reported at about 3 am.
- The walk up the Rockpile is steep and uneven, and you do it in the dark.
- Lake Louise takes two of the hours, and some reviewers felt it added cost without adding much.
Fewer than one review in fifty is below four stars, and about nine in ten give five. The listing's itinerary and "Know before you go" notes cover the timings, the waiver and the weather policy, but you have to scroll past the summary to find them.
For a first visit that wants Moraine Lake before the crowds and can manage a 3 am start, this tour makes sense. The next section covers the cheaper ways to keep the sunrise.
Sunrise tour, Moraine-only sunrise or a daytime shuttle?
This tour suits you if you want Moraine Lake at first light with a guide who drives, leads you up the Rockpile and gives advice for Lake Louise afterwards.
Consider the Moraine Lake sunrise tour from Explore Banff Tours if Lake Louise is not a priority. It sells a Moraine-only option and a combined option that adds 1½ to 2 hours at Lake Louise. Prices started from $70 per person when we checked, marked down from $88, and the listing holds a 4.9 rating from more than 150 reviews and lists five hours. Read the option name carefully: one reviewer booked expecting Lake Louise and said the tour did not go there, so choose the combined option only if you want both lakes.
If the sunrise itself does not matter, the Banff Lake Louise & Moraine Lake half-day shuttle tour (4.8, more than 2,000 reviews, from $40 per person when we checked, marked down from $60) reaches both lakes in daylight with pickup from Banff or Canmore. The listing says it visits Moraine Lake from June 1 to October 11 and goes to Johnston Canyon instead when the lake is closed. It has no sunrise and no head start on the crowds. Our shuttle guide compares it with the Parks Canada options.
Five tips for booking the Moraine Lake sunrise tour
- Check your email two or three days before for your pickup time. The operator sends the exact time, and it depends on where you are staying.
- Sign the waiver before the day. Every adult has to complete one, and the listing says a missing waiver cancels the tour.
- Look at the forecast two days ahead. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before a departure that starts in the small hours, so the evening-before forecast comes too late to act on. Forecasts change, and cloud can still hide the sunrise on a clear one.
- Dress for a cold hour by the lake. The listing warns that the sunrise is chilly. Blankets, seat pads, headlamps, rain protection and hiking poles are provided, so what you add is layers and gloves. Bring a reusable bottle for the water refills.
- Ask your guide where to sit and which Lake Louise trail to take. Several reviewers say their guide had specific advice for both, and the listing names the lakeshore trail and the Fairview Lookout as options.
When the Moraine Lake sunrise tour runs, and when the sun comes up
The tour goes to Moraine Lake, so it can only run while the lake is open to visitors. For 2026 Parks Canada lists the Moraine Lake shuttle season as June 1 to October 12, weather permitting. The listing does not give its own last date, and the booking calendar is where to confirm your dates. Our October guide explains what changes after the 12th.
Sunrise moves by more than two hours across that season, which changes what an early start gets you:
| Date in 2026 | Sunrise at Moraine Lake |
|---|---|
| June 1 | 5:34 am |
| July 31 | 6:06 am |
| August 31 | 6:54 am |
| September 30 | 7:41 am |
| October 12 | 8:01 am |
Times are calculated for the lake's location in Mountain Daylight Time. Direct sun reaches the water later than these times because mountains surround the lake.
The listing says the group arrives at least 45 minutes before first light. A 2025 reviewer said the sun was already up when they arrived and that they saw no sunrise, so it is worth asking the operator what time your van is expected at the lake, especially on autumn dates.
How the morning runs
The itinerary lists the legs one after another:
- Van from your pickup point to Moraine Lake: 1½ hours
- Moraine Lake: 2 hours
- Van to Lake Louise: 30 minutes
- Lake Louise: 2 hours
- Van back to your drop-off: 1½ hours
That comes to 7½ hours against the 6 hours in the listing's headline. The written description also gives Moraine Lake 2½ hours, half an hour more than the itinerary does. A reviewer of a similar sunrise tour to the same lakes said their day came in under seven hours, and GetYourGuide's own summary of recent reviews says some travellers would like the timing to line up better with sunrise and with the stated duration. Allow for the longer figure if you have anything planned for later in the morning.
The stops, one by one
Stop 1: Pickup in Banff or Canmore
The listing offers 32 pickup locations and the same number of drop-offs. Reviewers describe punctual pickups, but one October 2025 reviewer had to make their own way to a different hotel for collection, so check the pickup list for your accommodation before you book.
Stop 2: Moraine Lake and the Rockpile
You step out with a hot drink and a bag holding a headlamp, blanket and seat pad, and the guide leads the group up to the Rockpile. Reviewers of other sunrise tours to the same lake describe a steep, uneven climb in the dark, and one said their parents struggled with it. They also describe hundreds of other people at the viewpoint, and one guest on this tour said the sunrise is worth it once you see the crowds arriving later.
Cloud is the main variable. Several guests on this tour had a cloudy or stormy morning and still gave five stars, including one who got no sunrise but said the guide handed out raincoats and kept everyone comfortable. On a similar tour, a guest who saw nothing because of poor weather asked for a partial refund. One September reviewer of this tour said the van arrived 20 to 25 minutes late, no parking was left, and the guide could not walk with them to the viewpoint as the listing describes.
Stop 3: Lake Louise
The guide takes you to the lake entrance and points out photo spots and trailheads, and you have about two hours. Options include the lakeshore trail, the climb to the Fairview Lookout and a look at the Fairmont Château. One guest followed the guide's suggestion of a walking trail and left the crowds behind quickly. A June 2025 reviewer felt this stop adds to the price without adding much, since Lake Louise is easier to reach on your own than Moraine Lake.
Other Banff lake day trips
More ways to see Moraine Lake, Lake Louise and Emerald Lake, plus the Banff Gondola, Johnston Canyon and the Icefields Parkway, from Banff, Canmore and Calgary.
Other practical things to know
- The tour needs at least 6 guests to run. If it falls short, the operator offers a reschedule or a full refund.
- Children under 6 cannot join.
- Food and canoe rentals are not included, and tips for the guide are welcome but not mandatory.
- The listing's title now reads "Sunrise or Sunset", but its description, and the blankets, seat pads and headlamps marked "Sunrise Tour", are written for the sunrise option. Check which option you select before you pay.
- The listing says private or small groups are available, depending on the option. One 2025 reviewer said they paid over $300 per guest, so compare the total at checkout with the from price.
Is the Moraine Lake sunrise tour worth it?
Yes, if seeing Moraine Lake before the crowds is the reason you are booking. Reviewers praise the guides and the extras, and those who had a clear sky describe a sunrise worth the early start. If cloud hides it, you still get the lake, the guide and the drinks, but the $92 price may feel harder to justify.
The tour suits people who want a small group, a driver-guide and Moraine Lake at first light. Explore Banff Tours' Moraine-only option is the way to skip Lake Louise, and the half-day shuttle starts from a lower price again if you would rather have daylight and a later start. If a 3 am pickup rules out the whole idea, the shuttle is the one to look at.
If you do book, leave a free day after the tour and keep an eye on the pickup email.
Common questions about the Moraine Lake sunrise tour
Is the Moraine Lake sunrise tour worth it?
It is if seeing Moraine Lake before the crowds is the reason you are booking. Guides and transport score 4.9 out of 5 on the listing, and fewer than one review in fifty is below four stars. If cloud hides the sunrise, you still get the lake, the guide and the drinks, but the price may feel harder to justify.
What time is pickup for the Moraine Lake sunrise tour?
Reviews from June and July describe pickups at about 3 am. The operator emails your exact time two to three days before, and it depends on where you are staying.
Can you drive to Moraine Lake for sunrise yourself?
No. Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles all year, so you need a tour, a licensed commercial operator or a Parks Canada shuttle seat. Our guide to visiting Moraine Lake without a car compares the ways in.
What happens if it is cloudy on the day?
The tour runs in rain, shine or snow. The operator says it will reschedule or refund only in extreme weather, so ordinary cloud that hides the sunrise is not grounds for a refund. Free cancellation ends 24 hours before departure.
Does the Moraine Lake sunrise tour run in October?

Pickup and drop-off, a local guide, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and water refills, blankets, seat pads, headlamps, rain protection and hiking poles. Food, canoe rentals and tips are not included.
Sources and Limits
Nobody on our team has been on this tour. The rating, review count, price and itinerary come from the GetYourGuide listing as we read it on 30 September 2026. The price is a "from" figure that changes with date, option and group size, and the rating and review count change as new reviews arrive.
We read the recent reviews of this listing, including its lower-rated ones in English, Spanish and German, and the lower-rated reviews of three other GetYourGuide sunrise tours to Moraine Lake. Reviews of the other tours are used only for what is the same at the lake itself: the Rockpile climb, the weather and the crowds. Their pickups and logistics are not used.
The season dates come from Parks Canada's 2026 shuttle schedule, as covered in our October guide. The sunrise times are our own calculation for the lake's coordinates, and published Moraine Lake sunrise guides give similar times.
